The name of “Sandy Cheeks Movie: Saving Bikini Bottom” is very familiar to SpongeBob SquarePants and all other characters living in Bikini Bottom. In the role as Sandy, Carolyn Lawrence had made this character sound like she was from Texas for 25 years, but now that she has starred in one really silly rescue mission whose intended audience was supposed to be little kids and dedicated fans of the show, we are able to see her true colors. The whole nutty plot makes no sense but hilarious musical interludes keep it moving along. However, this is not so important with regard to the present argument. Just let your mind go blank and watch some mindless gags or total nonsense.
With a fast recap we can get up to speed here. Living under the sea next door to SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) is a squirrel scientist by the name of Sandy Cheeks. She wears a big helmet on her diving suit so she can live among crustaceans and starfishes etc under water. Her robotic horse is Sparky; she’s an ass kicking karate expert, knowledge driven being who can build almost anything instantly if required. We learn in a split-second opening scene that Sandy arrived at, wait for it… B.O.O.T.S. (Bureau Of Official Texas Science), was sent by them initially for research purposes on the sea creatures of Bikini Bottom turned out friends.
Sandy’s morning goes awry when a giant mechanical claw lifts Bikini Bottom out of its aquatic home.Sandy cleverly escapes its clutches while SpongeBob also saves himself. A clue suggests that B.O.O.T.S.must have taken away Bikini Bottom. And still more confusingly – Sandy discovers that her laboratory has been turned into a water theme park. She snatches up SpongeBob and hops on their daily flight over to Galveston, TX.What’s been happening at B.O.O.T.S.? Unknowingly, Sandy is just following the path of its new wicked boss.Sue Nahmee (Wanda Sykes) wishes to monetize Bikini Bottom’s people but most importantly she needs SpongeBob for her nefarious purposes.
Saving Bikini Bottom blends live-action characters with CGI seamlessly. Every single frame of the movie has a ton going on in it and one could easily pass over all the effort and expertise required to include such intricate special effects. Each succeeding installment proved better than previous ones produced by Nickelodeon’s production team responsible for this popular animated series as well as “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” along with its sequels “Sponge Out of Water” and “Sponge on the Run”. One memorable scene shows Sandy driving through a tornado with SpongeBob to avoid hungry Texan varmints and state troopers.
Moreover, we meet Sandy Cheeks’ family of circus performers who travel in an old camper van. As Pa Cheeks, Craig Robinson appeared in this film alongside Johnny Knoxville as Randy-their brother who uses a lasso, while Grey DeLisle did the voice acting for all other members of Cheeks’ gymnastic squirrel family. There is always that one whistle away acrobat squirrels when Sandy needs help.
Narratively, Saving Bikini Bottom runs into a brick wall when the squirrel crew arrive at B.O.O.T.S. and SpongeBob also makes it there. Sue Nahmee’s evil scheme is so incredibly stupid that if you sat down to analyse it, your IQ might drop. The second act of writer Tom Stern (An American Werewolf in Paris) and Kaz, creator of Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show, drags along without inspiration until the pacing almost comes to a halt. Bad jokes are strewn about left right and center as unnecessary filler inflates the run time. Watching Ilia Isorelýs Paulino and Matty Cardarople act like lab assistants in a live-action lab is almost torturous.
Thankfully, CGI leads take back control of the plot with some much-needed fun when it matters most. SpongeBob’s climax goes all out. He has been playing second fiddle up until now but SpongeBob is not one to be kept down long enough. This is why his character is made so delightful by an explosion of wackiness; some infectious personality by SpongeBob himself combined with his odd AF weirdness taking over the screen.” It would seem as if this insane twist of fate had been concocted while on magic mushrooms for the filmmakers”. The phrase “boggles my mind” can best explain it in positive sense that does not require an answer.” You cannot look away from just what unfolds as both an observer who cannot believe or reconcile things back to normalcy again.” Fortunately, there’s an über-intelligent squirrel ready to save-the-day.
Certainly, Saving Bikini Bottom will not be suitable for everyone’s cup of tea as such fans are only identifiable through certain exciting circumstances related to this film alone which they enjoy passionately. Unless you’re either a child, a die-hard follower of SpongeBob or stoned on hallucinogenic drugs, you’re wasting your time. The movie is not pretending to be anything serious or straight forward at all. It’s simply mindless fun; no thought of any kind is required.” From its crazy beginning, it was a wild ride that mostly succeeds in doing so.”
