Story: A washed-up singer moves to Cyprus in order to find solace and privacy but instead finds a new lease of life and deeper relationships. But is it too late for him to begin again?
Review: Little does John (Harry Connick Jr.) know when he buys the only house atop a cliff at an affordable price that his new residence overlooks a notorious suicide spot. To keep himself unnoticeable, this one hit wonder has no choice but report the first suicide he saw to Captain Manoli (Tony Demetriou). The insensitivity of the local authorities and townsfolk startles John who builds a fence around his property as a deterrent against jumpers. As a result, he meets Captain Manoli whom they go drinking with some night and Melina (Ali Fumiko Whitney), the young girl who sings at the local bar and brings him groceries. He also runs into Sia (Agni Scott) again reviving an old romance. Nevertheless, their relationship goes beyond just being ordinary friends.
Writer-director Stelana Kliris seamlessly blends romanticism on multiple levels while telling a heartfelt tale about love, desire, and loss. She manages to maintain suspense over how exactly John’s relationship with Sia had become so complicated until she starts revealing their past bit by bit. Her approach makes sure that the narrative does not get melodramatically heavy-handed or too serious that it ceases to be fun anymore. Stephan Metzner’s cinematography of Cyprus presents us with matter-of-fact images devoid of any sort of exaggeration or romanticization. This realistic film full of practical scenes displays strong conviction through its well-written script.
Surprisingly Carlos José Alvarez’s music for a picture whose cast includes two singers among its main actors (one three-time Grammy Award winner) sounds quite ordinary. However, it suits well with the plot that mainly looks into lives of few individuals who pattern their own destinies through choices. In the guise of not being didactic, Kliris employs the fence both symbolically and physically. The script is clear and frank.
Harry Connick Jr. gives a convincing performance as a fading celebrity who can easily pass for an everyday person. He seems so ordinary that you can easily identify with him. Agni Scott does well in her role as a woman torn between what her heart says and what her mind dictates. Ali Fumiko Whitney has strong support from the entire cast. Use of Greek alongside English conversation without losing meaning gives this movie a unique authenticity and charm.
The presence of so many other romantic comedies on OTT platforms nearly makes ‘Find Me Falling’ invisible therein but it will make you fall in love with its honesty and realism.
